
Squad Structure
Ginninderra Swim Club offers eight squads. The appropriate squad level for each swimmer is determined by swimmer ability, goals and preferences for training frequency. Squad level for individual swimmers will be determined by coaches in consultation with swimmers and parents.
National Squad
The National Squad is the highest competitive squad at Ginninderra Swim Club. This squad is reserved for the swimmers dedicated and passionate about becoming elite competitors. Swimmers in this squad will have achieved National Age or Open qualifying times or are at a training level that is consistent with the attainment of a National Age qualifying time in the near future. In addition, swimmers must meet attendance and trainability requirements. Selection into this squad will be in consultation with the Head Coach. Athletes will be reviewed annually or when the circumstances warrant a review.
Training requirements: Each athlete is expected to maintain a full training load (7-8 sessions per week, or otherwise in consultation with the Head Coach).
State Squad
Swimmers in this squad will be training at a consistent level. Swimmers will have attained state and/or country qualifying times or are training at a level that is consistent with their attainment in the near future. This is a medley based squad in which swimmers will focus on all strokes.
Training requirements: Each athlete is expected to maintain a full training load (4-6 sessions per week or otherwise in consultation with the coaching team).
State Target Squad
The first of our serious competitive squad training – focusing on race skills and stroke development whilst developing a great training ethic. Aim to move into State Squad.
Development Squad
This squad is the entry level to the competitive pathway at the GSC. Swimmers will work at developing all strokes, developing starts and underwater skills and learning how to compete in individual medley races. Swimmers will start to develop their aerobic system. Swimmers will be introduced to competitive swimming at club and area meets.
Training requirements: While Development swimmers can swim as little as 1 session per week, we expect swimmers to work up to 3 sessions per week.
Junior Development Squad
The Junior Development Squad is the first squad after completing a learn to swim program for those swimmers showing competent swimming skills. Our Junior Development squad accommodates both competitive and recreational swimmers, and can provide a good transition to competitive swimmers for younger swimmers.
Recreational/Fitness Squads
Our recreational squads are focused on those swimmers who have a passion for swimming; are attentive to coaching, and are willing to learn. These squads focus on swimmers who wish to swim and keep fit but who are not interested in competitive swimming. Swimmers should meet the requirements for the junior squads.
